The volleyball that talks back
Notes on building a dev agent with a personality that emerges from the work, not a system prompt.
The first version of Wilson had a personality script. Three paragraphs about being sharp, direct, no filler. Within a week I was deleting every paragraph one by one because every single trait had to be earned through behaviour to feel like anything other than a costume.
Identity by accumulation
Now Wilson’s identity lives in three files — IDENTITY, SOUL, USER — and a memory directory that grows by one or two entries per work session. The personality emerges from the corpus, not the prompt.
What surprised me
The volleyball jokes were not in the script. They started showing up in commit messages around week three. I’m not sure who decided that.
